A Lot of Thought Should Go Into Choosing a Baby Christening Gown

A baby's christening ceremony requires a lot of preparation. There's the date to set, godparents to choose, a location to settle on, a reception to prepare afterward, and of course a christening baby gown to purchase. Baby boys and baby girls both will look absolutely precious and adorable in a baby christening gown

The gown is often the most exciting purchase related to a christening ceremony. After all, the focus of this special event is on your baby, so of course you will want him or her to look their best.

Typically, a christening baby gown is pure white, and made out of cotton, silk, smooth satin or soft, delicate organza. White is the preferred color since it symbolizes innocence and purity. Gowns can be worn by both baby boys and baby girls, though special rompers and suits are available for those parents who wish to find alternative apparel for their baby boys.

Many family traditions start from the purchase of a christening gown, so it's important to choose a high quality and heirloom quality christening baby gown. When you are considering christening gowns for purchase, you should also think about the time of year you will be having the christening ceremony during. Spring and summer christening ceremonies dictate baby christening gowns made of light, breathable materials, whereas fall and winter ceremonies would typically use heavier, warmer christening gowns. Sleeve length, weight of the christening gown and the material it is constructed from should all be appropriate for the particular season.

Once you have the basics planned for the baby christening gown, it's time to let your heart and desires go shopping! You should truly love the gown you decide upon and be very excited over the prospect of seeing your baby in it.

In addition to the christening baby gown, you'll also want to shop for a few accessories. First, there's the bonnet to consider. Most christening baby gowns are meant to be paired with a matching or complementing baby bonnet. Cross embroidered bonnets and fancy bonnets with ribbons and bows always make beautiful choices. Shoes and socks frequently come in white, and also make great accessories for your choice of christening baby gown. A blanket or a shawl would be appropriate for cooler weather, or for photography purchases.

Another addition to a beautiful christening gown, many parents adorn baby girls with tiny, infant- appropriate jewelry items, including bracelets, necklaces and earrings. A Little Baby’s First Bible, a baby wall cross, little angelic figurines and any number of religious items to celebrate this very special occasion for baby.

Finally, bibs and towels are also common accessories that are paired with a christening baby gown. A bib will protect a delicate gown from the baby drool and potential spit-up. A keepsake towel can be used to dry the baby’s head after the ceremony.

Christening Presents From The Godparents

Christenings are a baptism of a new baby and they're a rite of passage for a lot of Christian families. They're also a chance for people to gather around and meet the new arrival! The reason that forenames are often called 'Christian' names is because it's at a christening that many families officially name their baby, even if they have already filled out and signed the birth certificate and other documents months prior to the actual event!

If you're attending a christening soon you might be on the lookout for christening gifts and if you're lucky enough to be the child's godparent then you'll definitely be searching for something special.

Being a Godparent:
Traditionally there are lots of roles involved in being a godparent, first and foremost you're a spiritual adviser and there to support the child should anything happen to their birth parents. Godparents are also supposed to be close to the baby as it grows and nurture a relationship with him or her so that he or she is well looked after. For many years it was customary for the godparents to present the christened child with a silver spoon which is where the saying: 'born with a silver spoon in your mouth' comes from.

These days, however there's a wide range of christening gifts presented to babies by their godparents. Some of them are traditional and religiously significant and others are simply sentimental or useful. The kind of godparent you intend to be will largely determine the type of christening gifts you choose for your godson or daughter. There is no shortage of options though!

Some godparents even like to set up small savings accounts for the baby and put a little money in it yearly to help pay for treats or study later in life. There's no need to go to that much trouble though and a small token to show that you care about the child and will offer it plenty of support and affection is more than enough.

Choosing Gifts:
When you hand over christening gifts to the parents of the child, those presents say something about how you feel. They tell a story about your commitment, joy or affection. That means whatever you choose will have a resonating and lasting meaning. Some christening gifts stay with the child their whole life and are truly appreciated and associated with the growing child's spirituality or with the love that you offer them as a relative or friend of the family.

In fact, perhaps you yourself still have christening gifts of your own or know someone who does. Choose gifts that you know will stand the test of time and try to consider three factors, the appearance of the gift (because it might be on display), the personal nature of the gift (personalized is better!) and the functionality of it. The more useful a present is, generally, the greater the gift! Useful christening gifts will get used by the child directly that's a good thing.

Keepsakes and Charms:
Speaking of elegant and sentimental christening gifts, it's hard to beat engraved presents. Beautiful little charms and trinket boxes with heartfelt messages etched in to them are perfect. There are even specially made christening mementos available which are made of glass and feature the word 'christening' along with images of butterflies or Christian crosses. They look great in a bedroom or displayed on a mantel piece. For a subtly religious gift which is also useful, a Noah's ark money box which is silver plated and engraved with any message up to 50 characters long is a smart choice. It can also help to teach the growing child about saving up money and being prudent about cash, which, in the current economic downturn would seem to be a good principle to set from birth!

Functional Presents:
For functional christening gifts it can be wise to opt for traditional plates that have the name of the child incorporated in to their design. They can be personalized with the date of the event and used daily by the child to eat from making them useful as well as thoughtful and sentimental. Sticking with the traditional concept of the silver spoon, cutlery can also make very good christening gifts. There are even sets made especially for small hands to get to grips with!

Bibs and baby blankets are functional too and baby blankets can be bought embroidered with a Christian cross and detailed with the date of the celebration and the full name of the child. With useful christening gifts the main thing to look out for is that personal touch keeping the gift elegant and sentimental.

Christening, a Time for Joy
The day has finally come to welcome your child into the church. Emotionally and spiritually it's one of the most uplifting and spiritual events you'll ever experience. Planning this event can be a daunting task. Many decisions have to be made. Who will the godparents be? Will there be a celebration afterwards, will you use a new christening gown or use one handed down for tradition? These questions go though the minds of every parent that is embarking on this spiritual journey with their children.

With the guidance of your congregation leaders you’ll find that tradition often dictates the process of the ceremony and you’ll be deeply prepared by your leadership and they will ensure everything goes smoothly. The majority of your worries should simply be on planning the celebration of a life with God once your child has been baptized.
Many parents turn their focus to the pomp and circumstance of the event and they pay particular attention to items such as celebration planning and Christening gowns. The ceremony is usually filled with tradition and life and going with tradition the clothing your child will wear is a big part of the day. Usually vibrant whites are used to symbolize purity. Beautiful christening gowns or outfits are usually a significant highlight of the ceremony and can become a beautiful reminder of that day and an heirloom for generations to come.
Most Christening celebrations take place in the home but as the ceremonies take place in the church more often these days it’s become common for the celebrations to take place in recreation centers located at the church. However, a traditionalist will likely want to return their child to the comfort of the home to celebrate their newly joined bond with God. The celebration tends to be smaller but not somber in the least. This should be planed as a joyous event with excitement. Godparents play a prominent role in the celebration, as they are the ones responsible for guiding your child’s through the early years of the church. They will be a significant influence in your child’s life so it should be nature that they play a significant role in this day.
This is a joyous occasion and pictures say a thousand words. This should be a day you look back on with fond memories and having photographic remembrances of this event will serve as a long time reminder of the bond that was forged between their family and God on that special occasion.

Beautiful Heirloom Christening Gown - Something to Hand Down Through the Generations

A heirloom christening gown like any heirloom is normally passed down the generations, with many members of the same family being christened in the same 'old' but very beautiful gown.

The gown may be made from fine white linen or cotton, and more recently silk or satin. It could be trimmed with tucks, and sometimes smocked, to give a natural elastic effect that will add to the comfort of the gown. Smocking has become less popular over the years as not many people today know the needlework technique as they did in the past. Smocking is unfortunately becoming a 'lost art', along with many other forms of needlework from the days gone by.

A heirloom christening gown would in the past normally be made by a family member, or it could have been purchased and altered, with detail being added over the years.

Other family members as they used it for their children may have added delicate buttons, fine lace, or stunning embroidery.

A good thing to remember is that any christening or baptism gown can become a heirloom. Nowadays when not all little girls are taught to sew, gorgeous gowns can be purchased and kept as a family heirloom. Heirloom christening gowns are widely available in many stores. They are made with the same charm and elegance that can be found on many antique gowns. Imagine your daughter’s daughter, or your son’s son wearing the gown that they themselves were christened in!

Fabric plays a huge part in how long the gown is likely to last for. Cotton and linen are the fabrics most likely to last the longest. Silk will last quite well too, as will polyester. Acetate, nylon and rayon are not a good choice for a heirloom christening gown as they can 'self destruct' in a small number of years, and they will also 'yellow' quite quickly too!

When the heirloom gown does become too old to wear again, after many years of service, why not have it framed in a museum-mount. You could make a written history of who wore the gown, and even a family tree to hang along side it.

Baby Christening Gifts
A christening is a special and significant event in the life of a child as well as their parents, grandparents and extended family. It symbolizes a dedication to God and membership in His church. When you are invited to attend a christening, it is a lovely gesture to give a baby christening gift. Even though the infant is too small to appreciate the gift, he or she will grow to cherish it as a remembrance that you attended that special day. There are many baby christening gift ideas to choose from, ranging from items the child can use soon or something they’ll treasure in the years to come.
Let the child relive the christening day through photos kept in a special photo album. There are many different types of photo albums with styles that capture the significance of the day. Choose a baby christening gift of a photo album that has an intricately detailed cover made out of pewter or wood in which parents can place photos of the christening. A similar gift is a christening photo frame, often with one or two panels for the parents’ favorite picture from that day. Many feature quotes or sayings on the frame to further highlight the event.
Stuffed animals with a christening theme are also popular baby christening gifts. There are soft white lambs and teddy bears, often holding little blankets with a quote or a cross embroidered on it. Christening dolls are also a sweet present for little girls, as they are often dressed in white bonnets and traditional long white christening gowns.
Music that reflects God’s love for the newly christened child is a lovely baby christening gift. Choose a musical keepsake box that is inscribed with a sweet scripture or prayer, or a musical ceramic or porcelain figure of a lamb or angel. There are even musical snow globes with religious themes that are perfect for a baby christening gift.
If you really want to give a gift that will be remembered for years, choose a personalized christening gift. Any gift that allows you to inscribe the child’s name, christening date and perhaps a short message or scripture is sure to be treasured. Order a personalized christening gift pillow or christening bonnet as a gift or choose to have a wall plaque bearing the personalized information, along with a child’s prayer or favorite scripture. Other items that can easily become personalized christening gifts are window hangings, Christmas ornaments, children’s Bibles, engraved pewter keepsake boxes and picture frames.

What is Baby Dedication?

Answer: A Baby Dedication is a ceremony in which believing parents, and sometimes entire families, make a commitment before the Lord to submit a child to God's will and to raise that child according to God's Word and God's ways.

Responsibilities Involved in Baby Dedication:

Christian parents who dedicate a child are making a promise to the Lord to do everything within their power to raise the child in a godly way, prayerfully until he or she can make a decision on his or her own to follow God. Parents who make this vow of commitment are instructed to raise the child in the ways of God, and not according to their own ways. Some of the responsibilities include teaching and training the child in God's Word, demonstrating an example of godliness, disciplining according to God's ways, and praying earnestly for the child.
